Exam prerequisites

  • Education:
  • Secondary degree (high school diploma, associate’s degree or global equivalent)
  • OR four year degree (bachelor’s degree or equivalent).
  • Portfolio Management Experience:
  • 10,500 hours (7 years) of unique non-overlapping professional portfolio management experience
  • OR 6,000 hours (4 years) of unique non- overlapping professional portfolio management experience.
  • Professional Business Experience:
  • A minimum of 8 years of professional business experience
  • OR A minimum of 8 years of professional business experience.
  • All portfolio management experience must have been accrued within the last 15 consecutive years prior to the application submission. There is no time range for the professional business experience.
  • General experience doesn’t apply to portfolio management experience, but portfolio management experience can count as professional business experience.
  • Where portfolio management experience cannot overlap, professional business experience can overlap with portfolio management experience.

Where can I purchase the exam?

The exam has to be purchased directly through PMI.

What happens after I pass the exam?

Your certificate will take 6-8 weeks to arrive. You can call yourself a certificate holder in the meantime.

Where is the exam?

All PMI exams, with the exception of the CAPM, are offered at approved Prometric Testing Centers worldwide. Check the PMI website for more information.

What happens if I fail the exam?

You can retake the exam two more times within your one-year eligibility.

What happens if my eligibility expires and I have not taken the exam?

Your application is valid for one year. After this time, you will have to re-apply.

What are PDUs?

PDUs (Professional Development Units) are the measuring unit used to quantify your professional development as part of the Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) program. 1 PDU = 1 hour of learning/activity.
